Obituary, Death Beloved Member of Lafayette County, Mississippi Community, Derrick Lamont Key, Fondly Remembered

Derrick Lamont Key, known affectionately as “Bird,” was a cherished member of the Lafayette County, Mississippi community, born on March 18, 1977, to Willie C. and Shirley M. Key. Embracing Christianity from a young age, he found solace and strength in his faith at East St. Peter M.B. Church, where he remained a devoted member throughout his life. Despite facing challenges due to his diagnosis of Autism, Derrick’s spirit remained unyielding as he navigated through life with resilience and determination.

Educated through programs at the Oxford School District Scott Center, Derrick received support tailored to his needs, allowing him to flourish academically and socially. He later joined the exceptional needs program at Oxford Middle School and graduated with the Class of 1996 from Oxford High School, a testament to his perseverance and determination to succeed despite obstacles.

Derrick’s unique personality brought joy and warmth to his family and the community at large. Fondly remembered as “Bird,” he enjoyed simple pleasures like watching WWE, shopping at Dollar Tree, and spending time with his family, particularly during spring break visits with his sister and weekly dining outings with his parents. His infectious laughter and genuine affection endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

On February 27, 2024, surrounded by his loving mother Shirley and sister Brenda, Derrick peacefully passed away after a two-year illness. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will forever be treasured by his family and friends. Derrick is survived by his mother Shirley Key, sister Brenda (Aundra) Price of Ridgeland, MS, and nieces and nephews Brandon, Bria, and Aundria Price. He is also mourned by numerous aunts, uncles, and his grandmother Evelyn Ramsey.

Preceded in death by his father Willie C. Key, brother Timothy O’Neal Key, and grandparents CF Pegues, Cora Pegues, and Walter Ramsey, Derrick’s passing has left a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him. However, his kind heart, infectious smile, and unwavering faith serve as enduring reminders of the impact he had on the lives of others.

A celebration of Derrick’s life will be held at East St. Peter M.B. Church, a place where he found comfort and solace in his faith. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Autism Society of Mississippi in Derrick’s memory, honoring his journey and supporting others facing similar challenges.

Though Derrick may have departed this world, his spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. Rest in peace, Derrick, your memory will forever be cherished, and your legacy will continue to inspire those whose lives you touched.
