According to South Burlington Police Chief Shawn Burke, Olango was speeding down Shelburne Road when he collided head-on with a bicyclist, instantly killing Joseph Byrd Allen. The impact of the crash was severe, and the cyclist stood no chance. The driver, identified as Olango, did not stop after the collision. “There was zero hesitation. The driver simply just kept going, never even slowed down,” Chief Burke expressed, highlighting the callousness of the hit-and-run.
Olango and his damaged yellow Mini Cooper were later discovered at the Travel Lodge in South Burlington. Police investigation revealed that Olango should not have been on the road, given that he was under suspension in Vermont, his car was not registered in the state, and, most significantly, he was under the influence of intoxicants.
