During the numerous hours that James and his father spent together fishing and trapping, James developed a strong relationship with his father. Hearing his son, Sawyer, argue about basketball knowledge brought him a great deal of pleasure, and he cherished every time he was able to spend with both of his sons. James’s love for his family included not just his immediate family but also his extended relatives and friends, whom he placed a high value on. His enthusiasm for athletics, in especially his devotion to the Hawkeye wrestling and football teams, was infectious, and he brought happiness and a sense of community to those who were in his immediate vicinity.
