Ilma Levine Obituary, Death – Our beloved co-founder, Ilma Levine, died away on March 11, 2024, the day she would have turned 95 years old. She was a member of our team for many years. Two individuals, Ilma Levine and Debbie Levin, who were both volunteers, were the ones who were responsible for initiating a hands-on science curriculum at Central Elementary School, which was subsequently renamed Beverly J. Martin Elementary.
Through participation in the program, children were given the opportunity to take part in scientific experiments. It was via the implementation of this scheme that the Sciencenter was initially laid out. During the course of their work together, Ilma and Debbie were able to change a straightforward storage area into a room that was specifically designated for the exploration of scientific topics. They accomplished this by putting together a collection of scientific kits that were interactive and then dispersing them over the area. In 1983, when the adults made the decision to teach hands-on science to a wider audience, they gave the adults a paper shopping bag that was packed with over $280 worth of coins and small bills that the children had gathered.
The bag was presented to the adults. All of the coins and dollars had been collected by the children on their own independent. This was the original contribution that was donated in order to get the Sciencenter off the ground. “Ilma was the kind of person that every director wishes they had to have on their board since she was an amazing volunteer and board member. Every director wishes they had someone like her in their team. She was that kind of person. She was logical, well-organized, and she finished everything that needed to be done, despite the fact that she was typically working in the background and performing an incredible job.
She was also very efficient. When she was told, “You must be so proud of what you created at the Sciencenter,” she would respond with the customary modesty that she possesses, saying, “Let’s just say that I’m pleased.” This was her response to the statement. When she was told so by another person, she would respond with this particular reaction. It is highly possible that the Sciencenter would not exist in its current form if it were not for her relentless work and steadfast commitment to her vision of introducing every child in our community, regardless of their circumstances, to the excitement of science. Her mission is to offer every child the opportunity to experience the thrill of science.
