The Academy Award-winning performer Regina King revealed her son’s death for the first time during a tearful interview with “Good Morning America.” King provided a perspective in the interview that aired on Thursday on the death of her son, Ian Alexander Jr., which happened more than two years ago. Alexander Jr. committed himself in January 2022 when he was 26 years old.

People often have preconceived ideas about what depression should look like. King told Robin Roberts of “Good Morning America” that “they expect it to look heavy.” “To have to go through this and not be able to take the time to just sit with Ian’s decision, which I respect and understand, you know that even though he didn’t want to be here anymore,” King went on. She then added, “It is a difficult thing for other people to receive because they did not live Ian’s journey or our experience.”

King first admitted to Roberts that her son’s death had left her feeling “angry at God.” “I was furious with God at that moment,” she said. Why would someone like Ian be accorded such significance? Ian said, “I’m tired of talking, Mom,” after we had gone through all we had with the therapy, the physicians, and the programs.

Two years after the loss of her loved one, the actress from “Watchmen” acknowledged that she is still in pain and said that she is now a “different person.”Before Alexander died away on January 19, she made the statement, “I am a different person now than I was then.” “Losing someone is an adventure. I understand that sadness is the absence of a goal for love. I know that since Ian is always with me, I must honor him in every aspect of his existence, speak about him in the present, and recognize the pleasure and love he provided to all of us.

She has said that she is still feeling “guilt” about his dying as of right now. There are times when I’ll experience intense guilt. As a parent of a deceased child, you can’t help but ask, “What could I have done so that that wouldn’t have happened?” Although I realize that everyone is experiencing similar grief, I want you to know that no one else can really be Ian’s mother. There is only me. Consequently, it is mine.

Subsequently, the “Boondocks” actor said, “The sadness will never go away,” adding, “It’ll always be with me.” Roberts revealed later in the chat that King attended this week’s 96th Academy Awards wearing an orange dress, Alexander’s favorite color, as a loving homage to the man who would often accompany his mother to award presentations.
