Michael Hummel passed away at Pennsylvania’s Penn Western University. Regretfully, Professor Michael Hummel has died away. He passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, aged 67. “PennWest California mourns the passing of Dr. Michael L. Hummel, professor for the Department of Criminal Justice and Psychology,” was the statement used to confirm his death. There was no mention of Michael Hummel’s real cause of death. On November 12, 1956, he was born into a family of Joseph and Helen Meyer Hummel in Moundsville, West Virginia.

Michael graduated from Columbia University’s Department of Social Sciences/Organization and Leadership in 2000 with a Master of Philosophy and a Doctorate in Philosophy. He also graduated with a Master of Public Administration from the School of Public and International Affairs at Columbia University. He served as a senior lecturer at Penn Western University’s California campus for a significant period of time. With a focus on security studies and criminal justice, he was well-liked by both students and peers.
Michael worked as a law enforcement officer and maintained an academic career. He worked as a committed part-time patrol officer for the Monessen Police Department and the Charleroi Regional Police Department. He was a trained Pennsylvania police officer. His dedication to serving others continued into the military, where he served for 22 years in a variety of leadership capacities.
Michael Hummel’s Professional Journey
Michael was a superb leader who served as an infantry platoon leader, the commander of a law enforcement company’s headquarters, and the commander of the 101st Airborne Division’s special response team at Fort Campbell.
Remarkably, he led both squads and teams in the 2/75 Ranger Unit at Ft. Lewis, Washington. He served as a military police officer and a Pennsylvania municipal police officer, giving him a wealth of knowledge in law enforcement operations. He participated in action with the 101st Airborne Division and the 2/75 Rangers. Michael worked for the Defence Department in security and law enforcement roles prior to joining the Energy Department.
In addition to his education and military experience, Michael took a leading role in planning regional security conferences, both domestically and internationally. He is the author of many papers on security procedures and counterterrorism/countercriminal activities.
Michael’s distinguished service earned him several military honours and medals, such as the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Meritorious Service Medal, as well as admission to the US Army Ranger Training School at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Purple heart recipient Dr. Hummel is a former military officer.
Graveside ceremonies will be performed in Arlington National Military Cemetery in Washington, D.C., where Dr. Hummel will be put to rest. Donations to the humane society dog rescue group Bridges to Home Animal Rescue in Eight-Four, Pennsylvania, may be donated in place of flowers.
