The Newry community is mourning the loss of Gary ‘Cookie’ McLoughlin, who tragically lost his life in a road traffic collision on Forkhill Road over the weekend. McLoughlin, described as a beloved member of the community, was in his forties at the time of the incident.

Local authorities have confirmed that McLoughlin was a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The devastating accident adds to the weekend’s toll, which saw a total of five lives lost on Northern Ireland’s roadways.

Among the victims of another collision were Phil Mitchell, Keith Morrison, Emma Mallon, and Marina Crilly, who lost their lives in the early hours of Sunday morning. The Linfield Football Club, where McLoughlin’s son Matty is a member of the under-18 team, paid tribute to McLoughlin on social media, expressing deep sadness at his unexpected passing.

In addition to his involvement with Linfield, McLoughlin was also remembered by his former football club, Ashgrove Rovers FC, where he played for six seasons. Described as instrumental in the club’s first trophy win, McLoughlin is fondly remembered as a club legend, known for bringing joy and laughter to those around him.

Further highlighting his commitment to football, McLoughlin served as the coach of the under-16 squad for Dungannon Swifts during the previous season. The club extended their condolences to McLoughlin’s friends and family, acknowledging his significant contribution to the sport and the community.

As authorities continue to investigate the collision on Forkhill Road, they have appealed to anyone with information or relevant footage to come forward. The Northern Ireland Police’s Collision Investigation Unit is urging witnesses or individuals with dashcam or mobile phone footage to contact them, quoting reference number 1661 23/03/24.
