Police: 6 dead after intoxicated Texas teen crashes into a minivan while driving into oncoming traffic

JOHNSON COUNTY, Texas — Luke Resecker, 18, is accused of crashing into a minivan while driving into oncoming traffic, killing six of the seven passengers on December 26th, 2023.

Resecker was intoxicated while he was driving and police recovered THC wax, a THC vape pen and cannabis from inside Resecker’s Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

The suspect was driving on U.S. 67 when he swerved over the yellow line on the undived highway. He began to drive straight into oncoming traffic, according to Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The driver of the Grey Honda Odyssey tried to swerve out of the way but the two vehicles had a head-on collision.

Resecker, Preston Glass and Lokesh Potabathula were the only people to survive and all were airlifted to local hospitals.

The family in the minivan was from India and was visiting family in Texas. They were coming back from visiting the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, according to the Star-Telegram.

The victims who died as a result of the crash were Rushil Barri, 28, Nageswararao Ponnada, 64, Sitamahalakshmi Ponnada, 60, Naveena Potabathula, 36, Krithik Potabathula, 10 and Nishidha Potabathula, 9.

Due to Resecker’s condition, he was deemed not “medically fit” to be in jail, according to The Dallas Morning News. A judge decided that he would be confined to his home and made to wear a GPS monitor. Resecker was able to post his $50k bond to stay in home confinement.

Resecker appeared in court on March 26th and was arraigned on six counts of intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle, two counts of intoxication assault, possession of a controlled substance and possession of cannabis.
