Michael “Mike” Charles Lykens Obituary, New Castle, formerly Blountsville – On Sunday, March 31, 2024, Michael “Mike” Charles Lykens, who was 74 years old and lived in New Castle, which was originally known as Blountsville, passed away. The 11th of January, 1950 found him being born in Hartford City. His parents, Robert Phil Lykens and Josephine Gloria (Lopez) Gwynn, were his parents. Over the course of his life, Mike served in a variety of ways within the town of Blountsville and the neighboring areas. He was tremendously interested in the community. Mike has been a member of the Blountsville Fire Department for more than half a century, which includes 31 years as the department’s chief.

He was a member of the Henry County Cemetery Commission, the Henry County Public Defenders Commission, the Henry County – Stoney Creek Township Republican Precinct Chairman, the Henry County Republican Club, the VFW/American Legion, and the Amvets. He also served as a member of the Blountsville Lions Club, where he was a former zone chairman. In addition, he held many other offices, including those of assistant clerk and treasurer of the Blountsville Town Board, treasurer of the Union Community Scholarship Board, and a former trustee of Stoney Creek Township.

This individual also served as a member of the Stoney Creek Township Trustee. The Indiana Volunteer Fireman’s Association was another organization that he was a part of. Mike was a member of the Harris Chapel Church of the Nazarene, where he served on the church board. This was the most essential aspect of his membership.

Mike had a career as an accountant for a total of 48 years, during which he worked for Modernfold from 1972 to 1977, Ingersol Steel from 1977 to 1982, Commercial Vinyl from 1982 to 2001, and Draper Shade from 2001 until his retirement in 2018. Mike served in the United States Air Force from 1968 until 1971, during which time he was stationed in Udorn, Thailand. He was a distinguished veteran of the United States Air Force. After receiving an honorable release from the Air Force, he went on to serve in the United States Army Reserves through the years 1971 and 1974.

Mike cherished the time he had to spend with his children and grandchildren. Statues of Fire and Buddha, as well as postage stamps, were among the things he collected. He had a gentle spirit and was not unfamiliar with anyone.

Mike was survived by his mother, who sadly passed away two days after Mike. He is also survived by his two sons, Michael Brian Lykens of Losantville and Kevin Lee Lykens of Mooreland, both of whom are married to Jennifer S. Daniels. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kourtney Daniels of New Castle with her husband Zack, Kaleb Alexander Lykens of Losantville, Dylan James Lykens of Losantville, Olivia Jewell Grace Lykens of Mooreland, and Dalton James Lykens of Mooreland; great granddaughter Adeline Rebecca Daniels of New Castle; sister Sheila Ann Grismore of Springport; sister-in-law Pam Shirley of Muncie.

Mike is preceded in death by his wife, Linda Christine (Shirley) Lykens; his grandparents, Charles Lloyd and Alma Coral Lykens, who adopted and nurtured Mike; and his daughter-in-law, Jennifer R. Lykens. His father and his mother, who passed away not too long ago, were also among those who passed away before him.

The Reverend Jim Ballenger will preside over the funeral services that will be performed at the Harris Chapel Church of the Nazarene on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at eleven o’clock in the morning. After the funeral, the burial will take place in Mooreland Cemetery, and the American Legion/VFW and the United States Air Force will be responsible for the military honors. On Friday, April 5, 2024, visitation sessions will be place at the church from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
