Kourtney Freeman Obituary: Girl killed in Wednesday night shooting near 33rd Street and Flora was a month away from her 12th birthday.

The shooting that claimed the life of a young child on Wednesday night is being looked into by Kansas City police.

When police arrived at a home close to 33rd Street and Flora on Wednesday at 9:45 p.m., they discovered an unconscious female who had been shot.

Kourtney Freeman, who was eleven years old and one month shy of turning twelve, was identified as the girl. Freeman was taken to a local hospital and later passed away, according to the police.

According to the police, bullets from outside the house struck her. The KCPD did not report having anyone in custody at the time of the latest update.

Although the circumstances behind the shooting, which occurred on the city’s east side shortly before 10 p.m., are still unknown, the neighbors describe the event as horrifying.

Saying hello in the mornings while waiting for the school bus, her neighbors claim she was a familiar face in the neighborhood.

A blood trail flowed out from the house on Thursday. The cops marked the porch with gunshot holes and a damaged front storm door, which is visible from the street.

“In my 29 years here, nothing has ever changed. You never know? You might hear a gunshot now and then. However, nothing like this,” neighbor Gloria Johnson remarked.

“It was awful.” It was awful. Too many drive-by shootings of youth, especially children, are reported to me. That seems to be what I took it to be—a drive-by. However, Mario White, whose sister lives on the block, added, “I’m not even sure of that.”

Although the specifics of what transpired at this residence remain unknown, Melesa Johnson, the director of public safety for KCMO, stated that this tragedy “shocks the conscience and soul of the community.”

“As a young child, she was killed. only for being a child. You’re right—people are shooting these weapons without thinking about who or what they’re shooting at, let alone their intended objective. It’s unacceptable. Other than the fact that the community engagement section is interacting with and assisting the family, I wish I could say more,” Johnson remarked.

She advised people to reconsider how they report gun violence to the police right now.

“We can make it extremely evident by having you call the police each and every time you see or hear something. We can make it clear in this way. And when we do that, we are not allowed to be selective. Johnson stated that it must be prompt, decisive, and consistent.

However, residents in the shooting’s vicinity claim to be justifiably alarmed and disturbed.
