MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Mobilians now have more places to recycle as a new center opened on Dauphin Island Parkway.

According to a news release, the new center, called “Parkway Recycling Center on the Peninsula” officially opened April 15.

Officials say the new center, funded through a grant from the Recycling Partnership, was part of an initiative to expand recycling in the city. Mayor Sandy Stimpson said in a post to Facebook, that the new center is the “third drop-off site built to make recycling easier and more accessible for the community.”

Drop-off recycling makes it easier for residents to recycle because, according to the city of Mobile Public Works website, there is no need to sort through recyclables.

  • Glass (As of April 1, 2024)
  • Styrofoam
  • Bows
  • Gift bags with bows, plastics, etc.
  • Plastic bags
  • Most wrapping paper

Only residents of Mobile are permitted to use the drop-off recycling facilities, according to Mobile Public Works. The facilities are available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Aside from the new facility, officials say other steps, such as hiring additional staff and increasing outreach efforts will be made to help expand recycling in the city.

For information on the existing centers, located at 4851 Museum Drive and 308 Pinehill Drive, and Mobile’s recycling program, visit the Public Works website.
