Luis M. Huesca Death: Gage Park incident claims life of Chicago police officer.
Luis M. Huesca Death – Officials reported that a Chicago police officer, aged 30 and a member of the department for six years, was fatally shot in the early hours of Sunday in the Gage Park neighborhood of the city.
Responding to a “gunshot detection” alert at 2:53 a.m. in the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue, officers found the off-duty officer with gunshot wounds in the 3100 block of West 56th Street.
He was rushed to University of Chicago Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The officer was identified as Luis M. Huesca, who was almost 31 years old, in a statement released by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Sunday morning. CPD Supt. Larry Snelling mentioned in a press conference that the officer was shot while returning home from duty and was still in uniform.
The circumstances of the shooting are not fully known, but it was confirmed that the officer’s vehicle was stolen by the perpetrators. Huesca is survived by his mother and uncle.
A procession from the hospital to the Medical Examiner’s office was held in honor of the fallen officer. An investigation into the incident is ongoing, with Snelling emphasizing the need to keep the officer’s family in thoughts and prayers.
