Luis M Huesca Obituary, Off-duty Chicago police killed while returning home from shift

Luis M Huesca Obituary – An off-duty Chicago police officer was fatally shot upon returning home from work in the Gage Park neighborhood early Sunday morning.

Officers were alerted to a ShotSpotter notification in the 5500 block of South Kedzie Avenue just before 3 a.m. Following a search of the area, officers proceeded to the 3100 block of West 56th Street, where they discovered the off-duty officer outside with gunshot wounds, according to the police.

CPD Supt. Larry Snelling stated that the 30-year-old officer was shot multiple times while returning home from his shift. He was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Today, that officer fell victim to the very type of crime he was dedicated to combating in order to ensure the safety of the people in this city,” Snelling remarked.

The officer had served in the department for six years and was set to celebrate his 31st birthday in two days. Mayor Brandon Johnson, in a statement, named the deceased officer as Luis M. Huesca of the 5th District/Priority Response Team.

“I met with Officer Huesca’s mother and uncle this morning and assured them of the full support of my administration as they navigate through this unimaginable loss. Our city is mourning, and we extend our deepest sympathies to their entire family, as well as Luis’ colleagues and community,” Johnson expressed. “My Office of Community Safety, in partnership with Supt.

Larry Snelling and the Chicago Police Department is dedicated to utilizing all available resources to track down those responsible for this morning’s shooting and bring them to justice. As the investigation progresses, we will provide prompt updates as they are made available.”

Supt. Snelling mentioned that the officer was in uniform at the time of the shooting. Although the officer’s vehicle was taken, it has since been recovered. Snelling could not confirm whether the incident was related to a carjacking. The officer is survived by his mother and uncle. A procession in honor of the officer took place on Sunday.
