Alf McCarthy Obituary-Death News; Former RTÉ Presenter, Alf McCarthy Passes Away At 73
Following a brief illness, the former producer and presenter passed away in Cork University Hospital Friday night. He was a well-known host of RTE Radio 1’s Late Date program, having spent over 35 years on the air.
When he retired in December 2015, he gave his last presentation. “I love the intimacy of radio and have enjoyed the privilege of being allowed into people’s lives and hearts every night,” he declared prior to his retirement.
He hosted the “Late with Alf” music podcast after retiring. Born in 1950, Alf started his career in broadcasting with RTE Radio Cork in 1979 after working as a DJ live.
For twenty years, he hosted the arts and current affairs program Corkabout. He then made the switch to television, co-hosting PM Live with Marty Whelan and Mary Kennedy on RTE One.
In addition, Alf was a seasoned producer who worked on the comedy programs Bull Island, The Usual Suspects, and Short Circuit.
Among the documentaries he produced were A Tale of Three Cities, Early Doors No More, and The Cleggan Disaster.
In addition to the film Strength and Honour, the award-winning actor appeared in the Everyman Theatre in Cork’s productions of The Dresser, A Streetcar Named Desire, The Woman in Black, and The Odd Couple.
His seven grandkids and his daughters Sarah and Ruth survive him. From all throughout the industry, tributes are being given to Alf, who is regarded as “iconic”.
