Notable Figure Of The Cypriot Community Georgia Alexandrou Passes Away

Georgia (Yiola) Alexandrou, a major figure of the Cypriot community of Australia, has passed away from cancer, leaving behind an immense legacy as an active member of the diaspora.

Alexandrou died on Sunday morning (April 21), and the funeral is to take place on Friday, April 26 at St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Canberra, on the corner of Wentworth Ave and Telopea Park, Kingston and She will be buried at Woden Cemetery.

Her family has asked that people, instead of flowers, donate to the Cancer Council ACT via the donation box that will be available at the funeral.

Alexandrou served as President of the Cyprus Community of Canberra and ACT and President of the Pan-Australian Coordination Committee—Justice for Cyprus (PASEKA), having a great impact through these roles.

The Cyprus Community of Canberra and ACT paid tribute to her in a Facebook post, stating that they are in deep mourning over the passing of “the heart and soul of our community.”.

“Yiola’s energy, vibrancy and community spirit over many years were examples to all who met her and helped foster a successful and cohesive Cypriot community in the ACT and Australia-wide,” their statement said.

“Her loss will be felt deeply within our community. May her memory be eternal.”

The statement also involved them extending their “deep felt sympathies go to her devoted family, husband Chris and son Andreas, alongside her mother and sister Anastasia, and mother-in-law.”.

The High Commission of the Republic of Cyprus in Australia also expressed their sympathies for Alexandrou’s passing, praising the tremendous fight she showed towards Cyprus and her family during her life and during her cancer battle.

“She exceeded all expectations at Calvary she was called to face and left with dignity as she lived her entire life. Her fight will always inspire us and we will try to keep her memory alive in every way,” their announcement said.

“Her huge legacy will be a beacon of hope for all who have passed, will pass through the High Commission of Cyprus and will show us the way until we achieve our goals.”
