A devastating car accident on River Rd in Sayre, Pennsylvania, claimed the lives of three prominent figures from the Northeast derby community early Tuesday morning. Brett Relyea, a respected racer and demolition derby icon from Owego, New York, perished alongside his girlfriend Melanie Schnurbusch and his longtime best friend Art Bidlack. The tragic incident occurred on April 23, 2024, and has since plunged the communities of Owego, Nichol, and the broader Northeast derby realm into mourning.

Brett Relyea was more than just a competitor; he was a father, son, friend, and an inspirational team member to many. His sudden death has resonated deeply across social media, where friends, family, and fans have been sharing heartfelt tributes to commemorate his life and contributions to the sport of demolition derby.

A prominent figure in the derby circuit, Brett was renowned not only for his prowess as a driver and builder but also as an influential promoter through his KOOS shows. His dedication and passion for demolition derby transcended the local level, making him a national figure in the sport. Known affectionately as “Champ” to his peers and fans, Brett’s legacy as a top-tier competitor and a kind-hearted individual is firmly cemented in the hearts of many.

Anthony, a fellow demolition derby enthusiast and business owner, expressed his sorrow and admiration in a tribute: “I was very sad to hear the news that Brett Relyea passed away this morning. I knew him from the demolition derby world, but when we talked, it usually ended up being about business and being business owners, and I considered him a friend. Brett is easily an icon of the demolition derby sport. He was not only one of the best demolition derby builders and drivers of a generation, but one of the best promoters with his KOOS shows, and one of the sport’s biggest fans.”

Anthony further highlighted Brett’s impact on the sport and community: “Brett Relyea would travel all over the country to run in so many different shows, and people would travel from all over the country to watch him run. And whether you were in the stands or driving, you had your eye on Brett when he was on the track. Brett was a kind-hearted, and fearless competitor. He dedicated his time and money to making the sport of demolition derby better for all, and to bring joy to countless people’s lives. In my Mount Rushmore of North East demolition derby drivers, Brett would be my 1st pick. You don’t get the nickname ‘Champ’ in a sport unless you are one of the best. Brett made his mark in this world, and will never be forgotten.”

The communities affected by this tragedy will remember Brett, Melanie, and Art for their vibrant lives and the joy they brought to others. Their untimely passing is a profound loss to all who knew them, and they will be missed deeply. As investigations into the accident continue, the local community and the demolition derby world alike hold tight to the memories of those they have lost.
