NYSP Update: Town of Lyme Shooting Involving Jefferson County Deputies Brian Hanlin and Nolan Drake, Chaumont Resident Brian J. Countryman Identified as Suspect
The tranquil town of Lyme was shaken by a harrowing incident in the early hours of April 27, 2024, when law enforcement officers responded to a report of a domestic incident at 12840 State Route 12E. Jefferson County Sheriff Deputy Brian Hanlin and Deputy Nolan Drake swiftly arrived at the scene, bracing themselves for the unknown as they approached the residence on foot.
Their arrival was met with a chilling sight: an adult male, later identified as Brian J. Countryman, age 68, emerged from the shadows, brandishing a knife and advancing towards them with alarming intent. In the face of imminent danger, Deputy Hanlin and Deputy Drake issued urgent verbal commands for Countryman to drop the weapon. However, their pleas fell on deaf ears as the assailant continued his relentless advance.
Faced with no alternative, the deputies made the difficult decision to defend themselves, firing shots in an effort to neutralize the threat posed by Countryman. Despite their best efforts to de-escalate the situation, the confrontation escalated into a chaotic exchange of gunfire, with Countryman ultimately subdued and detained by the deputies.
In the aftermath of the altercation, the deputies wasted no time in administering aid to Countryman, recognizing the gravity of his injuries and the urgent need for medical attention. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were swiftly summoned, and Countryman was transported to Samaritan Medical Center, where he remains in a delicate balance between stability and critical condition.
Miraculously, neither Deputy Hanlin nor Deputy Drake sustained any injuries during the confrontation, a testament to their bravery and unwavering commitment to protecting the community they serve.
In the wake of the incident, Sheriff Peter Barnett wasted no time in mobilizing resources and initiating a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the altercation.
