Terry Clark Hughes Obituary – One of the police officers who lost their lives while attempting to carry out an arrest warrant in Charlotte on Monday, April 29, was a graduate of a high school in Catawba County.
The tragic incident took place in the afternoon at a residence on Galway Drive in Charlotte. William “Alden” Elliot, an officer with the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections and a graduate of Newton-Conover High School in 1995, was fatally shot during the operation.
The identities of two of the other officers who were killed have been revealed: Samuel “Sam” Poloche, another officer from the Department of Corrections, and Joshua Eyer, a police officer from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department. The fourth officer, who was a deputy marshal with the U.S. Marshals Service, has not yet been identified.
A total of eight police officers lost their lives during the incident. They were responding to execute arrest warrants from Lincoln County for Terry Clark Hughes, 39, who was also killed in the shooting.
Hughes was wanted for possessing a firearm as a felon and for two felony counts of fleeing to elude arrest. Officers from various agencies responded to the call, resulting in this tragic outcome.
Two individuals have been taken into custody for questioning. According to the Officer Down Memorial Page website, Investigator Elliot had served in the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections for 14 years and was assigned to the Special Operations and Intelligence Unit. He leaves behind his wife and child, mourning his untimely loss.
