His mother, Tangea Nelson, reported that he had sounded frightened during their last phone call, saying “Ma, I need help. Ma, could you help me?” However, by the time she arrived at the location, he had already disappeared.

Tangea Nelson expressed her uncertainty about why her son had sought help, and the police are still working to piece together the events leading up to his death. Jovon Nelson was described as a Black man, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing 140 lbs., with dreadlocks and a neck tattoo. He was last seen wearing a gray jogging suit.
