On Thursday afternoon, Jairyn Blackwell, 30, was found shot multiple times in his vehicle on Springdale Road, and despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. According to the Springfield Township Police Department, officers responded to a call of a person shot inside their vehicle on Springdale Road at approximately 1:35 p.m. Upon arrival, they found Blackwell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, and despite attempts to revive him, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The police have not released any information regarding a suspect or the events leading up to the shooting, leaving the community stunned and searching for answers.

In a separate incident, a 16-year-old boy was taken to the hospital late Thursday night after being accidentally shot by his 17-year-old friend on Waterloo Road. According to Springfield Township Police Chief Jack Simone, the two teenagers, who attend Akron Public Schools, had been friends for most of their lives, and the older boy had been staying at the other’s house for the past few months.

While hanging out on Thursday night, the boys managed to obtain the 16-year-old’s father’s firearm, which was inadvertently discharged while the 17-year-old was handling it. The 17-year-old has been charged with felonious assault, although Chief Simone stated that he had no intention of harming his friend.

The police are still investigating how the boys gained access to the firearm, which is typically stored in the father’s bedroom, and whether it was locked up. The school district has been notified, and officials have offered support to students who may need it.
