A 32-year-old Clinton Township man, Steven Cole, has been charged with assault with intent to murder after allegedly shooting his neighbor during an altercation on April 25. The victim, who was shot twice, is expected to make a full recovery.

According to reports, Cole confronted his neighbor in the parking lot of their apartment complex, allegedly believing that the neighbor had been in contact with Cole’s girlfriend. The confrontation escalated, resulting in Cole shooting the victim twice.

Cole was arraigned on Friday in 41B Clinton Township District Court by Magistrate Ryan Zemke and charged with assault with intent to murder, a life felony; two counts of felony firearm; and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. He is also being charged as a habitual fourth offender, which could enhance his sentence if convicted.

The court set bond at $250,000 cash/surety, with no 10% option. Cole is not allowed to have contact with the victim or anyone associated with the case, and if released, he will be required to wear a steel GPS tether and abstain from drugs, alcohol, and weapons.

A probable cause conference is scheduled for May 14 at 8:30 a.m. via Zoom, presided over by District Court Judge Jacob Femminineo, Jr. This conference will determine if there is enough evidence to proceed with the case.

The incident has left the community shaken, and authorities are relieved that the victim is expected to recover. The case serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of violent altercations and the importance of seeking help in resolving conflicts peacefully.

Cole’s alleged actions have had a profound impact on the victim and the community, and the legal system will hold him accountable for his actions. As the case proceeds, the focus will be on ensuring justice is served and that the victim receives the support and protection they need.

The Clinton Township Police Department is commended for their swift response and thorough investigation, which has led to Cole’s arrest and charges. Their dedication to keeping the community safe is evident in their tireless efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.
