Devastating Fires Erupt in Brooklyn: Old Brooklyn Jewish Hospital and Christa’s Kitchen in Bushwick Ravaged by Flames; Multiple Injuries and Displacements Reported
A devastating fire broke out at the Old Brooklyn Jewish Hospital on Prospect Place in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, on May 4, 2024, leaving a trail of destruction and displacement in its wake. The fire, which started in the early morning hours, quickly spread throughout the building, which now houses apartments. Firefighters were seen working on the roof, with one set of windows blasted out, as thick smoke billowed into the air.
Meanwhile, in another part of Brooklyn, a five-alarm fire consumed Christa’s Kitchen, a popular grocery store and restaurant located on the corner of Cooper Street and Bushwick Avenue. The fire, which started on Wednesday, quickly spread to adjacent buildings, including a pharmacy and residential units. Christa’s Kitchen, which had not yet celebrated its first anniversary, was completely destroyed.
Six firefighters and one civilian sustained minor injuries in the Christa’s Kitchen fire, according to the New York Fire Department. The Red Cross reported that 55 individuals were displaced as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire has not been announced by the fire department.
Assistant Chief Tom Currao of the Fire Department of New York (FDNY) stated during a news conference that firefighters responded to the 911 call within three minutes. However, the adjacent buildings’ older wood constructions allowed the fire to spread rapidly.
