Mount Horeb Middle School Shooter Damian Haglund, 14, Fatally Shot by Police After Pointing Pellet Rifle at Officers; Investigation Reveals Cryptic Messages on Snapchat
A tragic incident unfolded at Mount Horeb Middle School on Wednesday when 14-year-old student Damian Haglund was fatally shot by police after allegedly pointing a pellet rifle at officers. According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Damian attempted to break into the school’s cafeteria during lunchtime by using the butt of a long gun to try and shatter a window.
The incident began at 11:11 a.m. when a call was made to the police reporting an individual approaching the school with a backpack and what appeared to be a long gun. Law enforcement quickly responded and located Damian, who matched the description, east of the school’s main entrance at 900 E. Garfield St.
Despite officers’ commands to drop the weapon, Damian failed to comply and was shot when he aimed the weapon at them. Lifesaving measures were attempted, but unfortunately, Damian succumbed to his injuries at the scene. No additional injuries were reported.
An investigation into the incident revealed that Damian had shared cryptic messages on Snapchat before the shooting. These posts, outlined by Chappell, featured phrases such as “Break free from the chains of slavery, cheers to the blood” in Finnish and “My dad is a war criminal” in Bosnian, which corresponds to the title of a Serbian war song.
The Mount Horeb police officers involved in the incident have been placed on administrative leave, following standard protocol. Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul stated during a news conference on the day of the shooting that Damian was fatally shot before gaining access to the school.
The incident has left the community in shock, and an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting is ongoing. The Department of Justice is working to determine the motives behind Damian’s actions and to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of school safety and the need for continued vigilance in keeping our communities safe. The Mount Horeb Police Department is dedicated to protecting and serving the community, and this incident is a testament to their hard work and dedication.
As the investigation continues, the community is coming together to support the family and loved ones of Damian Haglund, and to ensure that such incidents are prevented in the future.
