The Wichita Falls Police Department is investigating the tragic death of 28-year-old Trevenian Chaquan Mitchell, which occurred on Patterson Street on Monday night.
According to Sergeant Charlie Eipper, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Patterson Street at approximately 11:52 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2024, to conduct a welfare check.
Upon arrival, police officers interviewed a witness who was with the victim earlier that evening. The witness stated that they had both exited the house together, with the victim carrying an AK-47 wrapped in a blanket, among other items.
The witness reported hearing the rifle discharge and turning around to find the victim on the ground. The police were able to speak with the victim’s wife at the scene as well.
Based on the initial investigation, the Wichita Falls Police Department believes the shooting appears to have been accidental.
Detectives are still actively investigating the incident, and the scene is being processed for evidence.
The police department has not released any further information about the circumstances surrounding the shooting or the events leading up to it.
