California State University, Long Beach, is grieving the unexpected loss of Professor Marie Kelleher, a cherished member of the History Department. Dr. Kelleher passed away suddenly, surrounded by her family, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, passion, and scholarship.

Since 2003, Dr. Kelleher had been teaching medieval history at CSU Long Beach, inspiring generations of students with her expertise and enthusiasm. Her research interests included medieval Spain and the Mediterranean world, gender, and medieval law.

Dr. Kelleher’s work was highly acclaimed, and her book, “The Measure of Woman: Law and Female Identity in the Crown of Aragon,” received the prestigious “Premio del Rey” award in 2012 from the American Historical Association. This honor recognized her book as the best work on early Iberian history.

Throughout her career, Dr. Kelleher received numerous national awards and fellowships, a testament to her outstanding scholarship and contributions to the field of history. Her students have gone on to pursue graduate studies at top universities, including the University of Southern California, Fordham University, Cardiff University (Wales), and Princeton University.

Professor Kelleher was born and raised in Portland, Oregon, and earned her doctoral degree from the University of Kansas. In her free time, she enjoyed photography, cycling, and indulging in copious amounts of coffee.

Dr. Kelleher’s passing is a profound loss to the academic community, and her absence will be deeply felt by her students, colleagues, and friends. Her dedication to teaching, research, and mentorship has left a lasting impact on the university and beyond.
