David Terry Obituary, Death: Longtime Alabama Deputy Sheriff David Terry Dies in Off-Duty Car Crash Just Weeks Before Retirement

Tragedy struck the Lauderdale County community on Tuesday afternoon when a long-serving deputy lost his life in a car accident near Florence. Deputy David Terry, the county’s director of corrections, was killed in a car crash that occurred while he was off-duty, according to Lauderdale County Sheriff Joe Hamilton. The incident occurred at around 4:08 p.m. at the intersection of Florence Boulevard and Sweetwater Avenue, claiming the life of 57-year-old Dawn Buchanan of Florence.

According to Florence police, Buchanan was traveling east on Florence Boulevard when a vehicle approaching from Sweetwater Avenue failed to yield the right of way. Buchanan swerved, losing control of her vehicle, which then crossed over the median into the westbound lanes of Florence Boulevard and collided with Terry’s vehicle. Terry and Buchanan were pronounced dead at the scene by Lauderdale Coroner Kim Jones.

In a tribute online, Hamilton said Terry was a 26-year veteran of law enforcement. He is survived by his wife and three children. Hamilton noted that Terry was scheduled to retire in July and had recently submitted his retirement paperwork. He asked the community to remember Terry’s family and the men and women who served alongside him for many years in their prayers.

In a Facebook post in April, Terry reflected on his career, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to serve under four sheriffs and work in various roles, including corrections officer, sergeant, patrol deputy, transport deputy, investigator, and courthouse security. He wrote, “I feel that I have had a blessed career. I’ve worked with some of the best Deputies, Corrections Officers, and Municipal Officers in Alabama. I hope that my work has had a positive impact upon the citizens of Lauderdale County over these 26 years.”

Terry also expressed his appreciation for the memories and friendships he made during his time in service, saying, “I wish all of our current employees a safe and enjoyable career and thank you all for the memories and friendships.” He acknowledged that he would miss his “county family” and the various aspects of his job, including patrolling roads, visiting schools, working at sporting events, and assisting the people of his county.

Terry’s passing is a significant loss for the community, and his dedication and service will be deeply missed. The incident is a reminder of the risks and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families. The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office, Florence Fire, and Lifeguard EMS responded to the incident. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Florence police at (256) 760-6561.

The community is invited to share their condolences and memories of Deputy Terry, a dedicated public servant who will be remembered for his commitment to serving and protecting the citizens of Lauderdale County.
