Tragedy on I-90: Tractor-Trailer Collides with Two Thruway Authority Workers, One Killed and One Critically Injured in Construction Zone Accident

A devastating collision occurred on Interstate 90 on Thursday afternoon, resulting in the tragic death of a 62-year-old worker employed by the New York State Thruway Authority and critical injuries to another 58-year-old worker. The accident took place in a construction zone just before 12:30 p.m. and involved a tractor-trailer that collided with the two workers.

According to Trooper Lynnea Crane of the New York State Police, the investigation into the cause of the collision is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time. Crane emphasized the importance of driving with extreme caution and vigilance, particularly in situations where there are roadside personnel or other vehicles that have become stuck nearby.

Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences and confirmed the details of the tragedy in a statement issued by the state government. “An employee of the Thruway Authority lost his life earlier today while establishing a work zone on the I-90 in Henrietta,” she said. “Another individual sustained injuries and is still in serious condition. We are heartbroken over this senseless death, praying for the recovery of the injured worker, and grateful to first responders who sprang into action to support their fellow public servants.”

The accident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving and the need for vigilance, especially in construction zones. As Trooper Crane emphasized, “It is imperative that you slow down and move over if you come across a car parked on the side of the road, regardless of whether it is a worker or any other individual. We are always reminding individuals to not only pay attention but also to put down their phones and pay attention to their surroundings. Without a doubt, this is a tragedy, and if everyone had been paying attention and taking things more slowly, it could have been possible to prevent it from happening.”

As a result of the incident, eastbound traffic on the Thruway has been rerouted at LeRoy’s Exit 47 and is currently closed until Henrietta’s Exit 46.

The New York State Police and the Thruway Authority are continuing to investigate the cause of the collision and are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout the community, and condolences are pouring in for the family of the deceased worker and the injured worker.

In conclusion, the accident on I-90 is a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of safe driving and the need for vigilance, especially in construction zones. Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and we urge all drivers to slow down, move over, and pay attention to their surroundings to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
