Allen Weisselberg, the former Chief Financial Officer of the Trump Organization, was sentenced to five months in prison on Wednesday for lying under oath during the civil fraud trial of former President Donald Trump and the preceding investigation. Weisselberg, 76, pleaded guilty to two felony counts of perjury last month.

During the sentencing, Judge Laurie Peterson asked Weisselberg if he had anything to say, and he replied, “No, your honor.” He was then handcuffed and taken into custody. Weisselberg had difficulty explaining why Trump’s triplex penthouse was reported as 30,000 square feet, when it was actually less than 11,000 square feet. He claimed it was “almost de minimis” and he didn’t focus on it, but emails and a letter signed by Weisselberg contradicted his testimony.

Weisselberg’s guilty plea has been reframed by Trump’s defense attorneys as an act of legal compulsion rather than an admission of crime. However, Judge Peterson’s sentence and the evidence presented during the trial suggest that Weisselberg’s perjury was a deliberate attempt to mislead the court.

This is not Weisselberg’s first criminal conviction. He was sentenced to three months in prison for tax fraud last year after pleading guilty to 15 felony charges related to his salary while working for Trump.

The sentencing comes after New York Judge Arthur Engoron ordered Trump to pay $464 million in disgorgement and pre-judgment interest in February, finding that Trump, his adult sons, Weisselberg, and another former executive were liable for using “numerous acts of fraud and misrepresentation” to inflate Trump’s net worth and obtain more favorable loan terms. Trump has denied any misconduct and is appealing the decision.

In conclusion, Allen Weisselberg’s sentencing marks another legal blow to the Trump Organization and its former executives, highlighting the consequences of lying under oath and engaging in fraudulent activities. As the legal proceedings continue, the spotlight remains on Trump and his associates, with the public eagerly awaiting the outcome of the appeals and further developments in this high-profile case.
