Born on January 1st, 1961, John was the first male born that year in Louisville. He was the ninth child of John “Jack” Dant Jr. and Faye Gross Dant, and the only male among eight sisters.
John’s educational journey began at St. Agnes Catholic School, followed by attending multiple high schools, including St. Xavier, Pikeville High School, and Atherton High School, due to his family’s frequent moves. Although he never attended college, John was a devoted supporter of the University of Kentucky athletics team, much to his wife’s dismay.
John’s remarkable work ethic began as a bag boy at a local grocery store. At just 26 years old, he acquired The Back Door, a neighborhood pub in the Louisville Highlands, which he transformed into a renowned full-service bar restaurant over 36 years. John was a kind, jovial, and generous boss, beloved by his staff and customers. He was a passionate supporter of animal rescue and the arts, sponsoring numerous fundraising events and generously giving his time and talent.
John was deeply involved in the Highlands community, working to preserve and enhance the quality of life through his contributions to various organizations and collaborations with neighborhood associations and neighbors.
