The community of Shawnee, Kansas, is mourning the loss of a beloved son, brother, and friend, Henry Joseph Tomasic, who passed away on May 11, 2024, at the age of 23. Born on February 9, 2001, in Merriam, Kansas, Henry touched the lives of everyone around him with his compassionate nature, unwavering determination, and zest for life. His passing leaves behind cherished memories that will be remembered forever by those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Henry was a remarkable individual who exemplified excellence in both academics and character. Throughout his academic journey at the University of Kansas, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a genuine passion for learning. His dedication was evident in his successful completion of two professional accounting internships at Myers and Stauffer and Security Benefit, where he excelled in his field.
Beyond his academic pursuits, Henry was known for his approachable nature and his willingness to help others. His work at Blind Box BBQ and Tropical Smoothie Cafe showcased his excellent work ethic and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether he was serving customers or studying for his next exam, Henry approached each task with diligence and a positive attitude.
Henry’s thirst for knowledge extended beyond the classroom. He was deeply interested in astronomy and even built his own telescope from materials acquired at Home Depot and online. His curiosity and passion for discovery inspired those around him to explore the wonders of the universe and embrace the joy of learning.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Henry was an avid sports enthusiast. He enjoyed golf, soccer, tennis, swimming, and skateboarding, and was a devoted fan of the Chiefs football team and the Jayhawk basketball and football teams. His passion for sports extended beyond the sidelines; in 2022, Henry drove to New Orleans to personally cheer on the Jayhawks to their National Championship victory, a testament to his unwavering dedication and loyalty.
Henry’s involvement in various organizations, including Phi Kappa Tau and the St. John’s Men’s Club, reflected his commitment to leadership and community service. As president of Phi Kappa Tau, he led by example, inspiring his peers to make a positive impact in their community and beyond. Henry’s leadership skills and his genuine concern for others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Henry’s academic achievements were a testament to his hard work and dedication. He attended Broken Arrow Elementary School and Trailridge Middle School before graduating from Shawnee Mission Northwest in 2019. Throughout his academic journey, Henry achieved significant milestones, including an ACT score of 35, recognition as a National Merit Scholar: Commended, the Chancellor’s scholarship, and consistent placement on the Dean’s list.
Henry will be deeply missed by his loving family, including his parents, Pucka O. Tomasic and Mark J. Tomasic, his stepmother April Tomasic, his twin sisters Sophie Tomasic and Lila Tomasic, his younger brother Frank Tomasic, his stepbrothers Matthew and Quinten Wittenauer, his paternal grandparents Nick and Karolyn Tomasic, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 16th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Amos Family Funeral Home, located at 10901 Johnson Drive, Shawnee, Kansas. The funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 17th, at Shawnee Presbyterian Church, located at 6837 Nieman Road in Shawnee. A private burial will follow at Pleasant View Cemetery in Shawnee.
