The city of Minneapolis is reeling from the tragic loss of Officer Jamal Mitchell, who was fatally shot during a multiple-victim incident on Blaisdell Avenue in the Whittier neighborhood on Thursday evening. The incident has left the community heartbroken and in deep mourning.
Mayor Jacob Frey held a somber press conference to honor Officer Mitchell, describing him as a hero who gave the ultimate sacrifice. “He gave the ultimate sacrifice,” Frey said. “Protecting and saving the lives of others. His service and dedication will forever be remembered by Minneapolis.”
According to the Minneapolis Police Department, officers responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment building on the 2200 block of Blaisdell Avenue. When they arrived at the scene, they discovered a harrowing situation inside the apartment.
Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) Superintendent Drew Evans provided further details, revealing that inside the apartment, two men had been shot. One of the victims succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while the other was transported to the hospital in critical condition. Additionally, the suspected shooter was confirmed dead.
Assistant Chief Blackwell of the Minneapolis Police Department reported that a total of four people were injured during the incident, including a firefighter and another police officer. The BCA later revealed a disturbing detail: officers were “ambushed” upon responding to the scene. Superintendent Evans elaborated that Officer Mitchell had exited his vehicle after spotting injured individuals nearby. Tragically, while attempting to render medical aid, Officer Mitchell himself fell victim to the ambush.
The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association (MPPOA) shared that Officer Mitchell was just 28 years old. He was notably one of two Minneapolis officers recognized last year for their bravery in rescuing an elderly couple from a burning home. The MPPOA extended its condolences and commended the fallen officer’s bravery in an official statement.
“The law enforcement community is devastated and mourning,” MPPOA Executive Director Brian Peters wrote. “Once again, a police officer bravely faced danger and tragically lost his life protecting the community. This officer exemplified unmatched dedication, bravery, and service in defense of the public.
