3 Indicted for Deadly Shooting That Killed Ta’Von Thompson and De’Andre Smith in Downtown Cleveland

CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley announced that a Cuyahoga County grand jury has returned an indictment charging Mark Hardy, 27, and Kenneth Patterson, 28, for killing two people, and Da’Karai Johnson, 27, for shooting two people in Downtown Cleveland.

On May 26, 2024, around 3 a.m., a tragic altercation occurred near St. Clair Avenue and East 13th Street in Downtown Cleveland. Mark Hardy, Kenneth Patterson, and Da’Karai Johnson were among a group of people standing outside when a confrontation escalated into deadly violence. According to the indictment, Hardy, Patterson, and Johnson fired multiple shots, resulting in the deaths of Ta’Von Thompson, 28, and De’Andre Smith, 24. Additionally, a 26-year-old female and a 19-year-old male were injured in the shooting.

The Cleveland Division of Police (CDP) and Cleveland EMS responded promptly to the scene. They found four individuals suffering from gunshot wounds and immediately transported them to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, Ta’Von Thompson and De’Andre Smith were later pronounced dead. The 26-year-old female and 19-year-old male, whose names have not been released, received treatment for their injuries and are expected to recover.

Investigation and Arrests

Patterson fled to Tennessee but was apprehended by the Tennessee Highway Patrol on June 12, 2024.

On June 14, 2024, Mark Hardy and Kenneth Patterson were indicted on the following charges:

  • Three counts of Murder
  • Two counts of Felonious Assault

Da’Karai Johnson was indicted on the following charges:

  • Four counts of Felonious Assault
