Sterling Walsh succumbed to his injuries on Saturday, June 15, 2024, and was pronounced dead at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, surrounded by his grieving family. The untimely death of this young man has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Sterling Walsh was born on October 21, 1994, and spent his formative years in Sauk City. He graduated from Sauk Prairie High School in 2013, where he not only excelled academically but also made a significant impact in athletics, particularly in tennis. Sterling’s dedication to the sport was evident as he earned letters all four years and held the position of the #1 singles player and Team Captain. His leadership and competitive spirit were key factors in his team’s successes and his personal growth.
After high school, Sterling attended the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh, where he pursued and completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. His time at the university was marked by his commitment to his studies and his passion for teaching. During a summer job at the Dells Army Ducks, a popular tourist attraction in Wisconsin Dells, Sterling met Katie Nelson. Their meeting blossomed into a beautiful relationship, culminating in their marriage on October 2, 2021.
Sterling and Katie established their home in New Lisbon, where Sterling began his career as a math teacher at Mauston High School in 2019. His tenure at the school was marked by his positive outlook, dedication to his students, and competitive nature. Sterling’s enthusiasm for mathematics and his ability to inspire his students were evident in his role as the Advisor for the School Math Team. Under his guidance, the team achieved remarkable success, winning the South-Central Conference Math Competition.
In addition to his teaching duties, Sterling also served as the coach for the girls’ tennis team and assisted with the boys’ tennis team. His involvement in these extracurricular activities highlighted his commitment to fostering a love for sports and teamwork among his students. Sterling’s influence extended beyond the classroom and the tennis court, touching the lives of many students, colleagues, friends, and family members.
Sterling is survived by a loving and supportive family who will miss him dearly. His beloved wife, Katie, stood by his side through every challenge and triumph. He is also survived by his parents, Dean and Joanne, who provided him with unwavering support and guidance throughout his life. His sister-in-law, Lindsey (James) Lierman, and their daughters, Sophia and Claire, will also miss his presence.

To honor and celebrate Sterling’s life, a funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, June 24, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, located at 100 Oak St., Prairie du Sac. The visitation will take place from 2:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 23, at the church, and also one hour before the service on Monday. Following the funeral service, interment will be held at the Prairie du Sac Cemetery, where Sterling will be laid to rest surrounded by family and friends who loved him deeply.
