Nicole Mertens, a cherished elementary school teacher, passed away suddenly on Monday, July 8, 2024, leaving behind a community in mourning. The news of her passing was confirmed in several publications released on social media, and her family has been receiving an outpouring of love, respect, and support from the Old Union Elementary School faculty, staff, parents, friends, and neighbors.

Nicole Mertens was an incredible educator who taught art and fourth grade at Old Union Elementary School. She had the pleasure of instructing the children of many EIS families in art during their time at OUES. Her passion for teaching and her unwavering commitment to education inspired countless young people, and her legacy will continue to impact the lives of many.

As a CISD teacher for 21 years, Nicole was a cornerstone of the community. Everyone she came into contact with was profoundly impacted by her fervor for learning and unwavering commitment to teaching students. She had a unique talent for uplifting and guiding young people, changing many lives forever.

Nicole was not only a gifted and inspirational teacher but also a loving mother and devoted wife. She resided in Southlake with her husband Mark, and they are the parents of two Dragon students. Her family has been in need of prayers, and the community has come together to support them during this difficult time.

The City of Southlake, the City Council, and City Staff have expressed their sympathies and grief over the loss of Nicole Mertens, a resident of Southlake and a beloved CISD teacher. The Old Union Elementary School faculty, staff, parents, friends, and neighbors have shown the family an abundance of love, respect, and support, as well as Principal Fike’s kind remarks.
