On October 2, 2024, Natividad Cacdac Arellano, affectionately known as “Naty,” passed away peacefully in the loving presence of her family at the age of 80. A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, Naty’s passing has left a profound void in the lives of all who knew her. Born in Naguilian, La Union, Philippines, on December 3, 1943, she built a life rooted in love, resilience, and unwavering loyalty to her family and community. Naty’s journey through life was one marked by selflessness, generosity, and an infectious zest for life, qualities that endeared her to all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Raised in a large family in the Philippines, Naty’s early years were shaped by the values of hard work, compassion, and community. Her parents, Tomas and Maria Cacdac, instilled in her a strong sense of responsibility to care for others, and this ethic of service would follow Naty throughout her life. Growing up, she was known for her determination, her kindness, and her ability to brighten any room with her radiant smile. She was a natural nurturer, always caring for her siblings and later, in her adult life, extending that love and care to her own children and grandchildren.
In her early twenties, Naty immigrated to the United States, seeking to build a better life for herself and her family. She settled in Centreville, Virginia, where she would spend the remainder of her life. Although her new life in the U.S. came with its challenges, Naty’s determination, work ethic, and unyielding spirit ensured that she quickly established herself within the community. Over time, she became a beloved figure in Centreville, known not only for her deep compassion but also for her ability to make every person she encountered feel welcomed and loved.
Naty’s life was built on the foundation of family. She married her husband, Alberto Arellano, in 1970, and together they raised two children: Michael Donnelly and Danica Quigley. Her children were the center of her world, and she dedicated her life to ensuring their happiness and well-being. As a mother, Naty was both nurturing and strong. She encouraged her children to pursue their dreams while instilling in them the importance of kindness, resilience, and integrity. Her unwavering support and love were constants in their lives, and her presence was a source of comfort and strength.
Naty’s dedication to her family extended even further as she became a grandmother. Her grandchildren, Lyla, Makayla, Nina Belle, Darwin, and Leona, were her pride and joy. She was a doting grandmother who took every opportunity to spend time with her grandchildren, showering them with love and wisdom. From teaching them how to cook traditional Filipino dishes to sharing stories about her life in the Philippines, Naty passed down her values and traditions to the next generation, ensuring that her legacy of love and kindness would endure.
In addition to her deep devotion to family, Naty was also known for her many personal passions. She had an incredible love for gardening, and her home was filled with vibrant flowers and plants that she lovingly tended to. Her garden was a reflection of her personality—colorful, lively, and full of warmth. Naty’s love for nature extended beyond her garden, as she also enjoyed spending time outdoors, going for long walks, and appreciating the beauty of the world around her.
Naty was also an exceptional cook, and her home was often filled with the aromas of delicious meals prepared for her family and friends. Her culinary skills were legendary, and she took great pride in sharing her love for food with others. Whether it was a casual family dinner or a large gathering with friends, Naty’s kitchen was always open, and she welcomed everyone with open arms. Her cooking was a way for her to express her love, and her dishes were often the centerpiece of many cherished family memories.
Beyond her love for gardening and cooking, Naty had a passion for dancing and travel. She was known for her joyful spirit and was often the first one to hit the dance floor at family gatherings. Her laughter and enthusiasm were infectious, and she had a unique ability to make even the simplest moments feel special. Naty’s love for travel took her to many places around the world, but no matter where she went, she always carried with her the warmth and kindness that defined her.
Naty’s presence in her community was one of unwavering generosity. She was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, whether it was offering a kind word, providing a meal, or simply being there to listen. Her home was a sanctuary for friends, neighbors, and family members alike, a place where love and laughter were always abundant. Naty’s spirit of giving extended far beyond her immediate circle, as she was also involved in various charitable efforts throughout her life. Her kindness knew no bounds, and she touched countless lives with her selfless acts of compassion.
The passing of Naty has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of her loved ones. Her children, Michael and Danica, have expressed their deep sorrow at the loss of their beloved mother. “She was our rock, our source of strength and love,” said Michael. “She taught us everything we know about love, resilience, and the importance of family. We are heartbroken, but we find comfort in the many beautiful memories we have of her.” Danica added, “Mom was the most generous and loving person I’ve ever known. She had a way of making everyone feel special, and her love for us was endless. We will miss her every day.”
Naty’s grandchildren are also struggling to cope with the loss of their beloved “Lola.” Lyla, the eldest, remembers her grandmother as a guiding light in her life. “Lola was always there for me, no matter what,” she said. “She had this incredible ability to make everything better, just by being herself. I’m going to miss her so much, but I know she’ll always be with us in spirit.” Makayla echoed those sentiments, saying, “Lola was the heart of our family. She made every moment special, and her love was something you could feel in everything she did. We were so lucky to have her.”
As the family prepares to say their final goodbyes, they take solace in knowing that Naty’s legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will live on through the lives she touched. A memorial service will be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home on October 18, 2024, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Family, friends, and community members are invited to come together to celebrate Naty’s life and to honor her memory. The family has asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a local charity that supports immigrant families, a cause that was close to Naty’s heart.
Though her physical presence is no longer with them, Naty’s family knows that her spirit will continue to guide them. Her love, her laughter, and her unwavering kindness have left an indelible mark on the world, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew her.
Rest in peace, Natividad Cacdac Arellano. Your life was a testament to the power of love, and your legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know you. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
