Tragic Collision on Iowa Highway 1 Claims the Lives of Fairfield Residents John McAndrew, Charles Person, and Amanda Person; Teen Passenger Injured in Washington County Accident

A devastating collision on Iowa Highway 1 in Washington County on the morning of Monday, December 4, 2024, resulted in the tragic loss of three lives and left a teenager injured. The victims, identified as John McAndrew, 70, Charles Person, 54, and Amanda Person, 41, were all residents of Fairfield, Iowa. The crash occurred around 9:00 a.m. in the 1700 block of the highway, just south of Kalona.

The Iowa State Patrol reported that the collision involved a southbound vehicle attempting to overtake a snowplow. The overtaking maneuver caused the vehicle to cross the center line, where it collided head-on with a northbound Nissan carrying the victims.

Sequence of Events

According to preliminary reports, the crash unfolded during snowy conditions, which had prompted snowplows to operate along Iowa Highway 1 that morning. A southbound sedan, whose driver has not yet been publicly identified, approached a snowplow and attempted to pass it in the two-lane highway’s opposing lane.

The overtaking vehicle crossed into the northbound lane, directly into the path of a Nissan Altima carrying John McAndrew, Charles Person, Amanda Person, and a 17-year-old passenger. The Nissan had no opportunity to avoid the oncoming vehicle, resulting in a high-impact collision.

First responders arrived to find the Nissan severely damaged. Despite their efforts, McAndrew, Charles Person, and Amanda Person succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The 17-year-old passenger, who has not been named due to their age, was critically injured and transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment.

Investigative Efforts

The Iowa State Patrol continues to investigate the crash, focusing on the actions of the driver who attempted to overtake the snowplow. Authorities are reviewing weather conditions, road maintenance, and visibility at the time of the incident. Early reports indicate that the road was wet and potentially slick, contributing to the loss of control during the overtaking maneuver.

Investigators are also examining whether speed or driver error played a role. Toxicology tests will be conducted to determine if impairment was a factor.

“We are committed to thoroughly understanding what led to this tragic accident,” said Lt. William Patterson of the Iowa State Patrol. “Our priority is to ensure accountability and to prevent similar incidents in the future.”

Road Safety Concerns

The crash has reignited discussions about the dangers of overtaking vehicles on two-lane highways, particularly in adverse weather conditions. Iowa Highway 1 is a well-traveled route, but its limited passing zones and winter hazards can pose significant risks.

Local residents have called for increased signage and public awareness campaigns to address safe driving practices during the winter months.

Community Support Initiatives
