Gilles was raised in the comfort of a big, loving family as the seventh child of Marie-Jean and Leopold Plante, who were born in Arthabasca, Quebec. Before the Plante family moved to the bustling Duberger area of Quebec City, he was raised in Victoriaville.

A Journey in Broadcasting

Gilles started a spectacular career in broadcasting at the age of eighteen, having been hired as a summer replacement by CBC/Radio Canada in 1974. This early experience sparked his enthusiasm for the media industry. Despite his youth, Gilles showed incredible talent and commitment, which led to the organization giving him a permanent position. He worked at Radio Canada to hone his skills while pursuing his college degree in electronics with a focus on audiovisuals.

Climbing the Career Ladder

Gilles made consistent progress during his time at Radio Canada, which is indicative of his steadfast dedication to quality work. He began his career in the television control room and moved through the ranks with ease, working as a sound technician, cameraman, editor, and producer of electronic news gathering.

He was clearly a versatile and skilled artist because he was instrumental in creating content for Le Téléjournal, the premier national news program in France.

Gilles’s life changed dramatically in the vibrant city of Halifax when he met Sheree Fitch, the love of his life. Gilles relocated to Halifax with the goal of advancing his career and improving his English fluency. He did so out of a desire for both professional and personal development.

While he worked with respected colleagues, such as Radio Canada legend James Bambier, and reported on topics throughout Atlantic Canada for Le Téléjournal, his time in Halifax proved to be transformational. Within the broadcasting industry, Gilles gained respect and recognition for his commitment to excellence in his art.

Transatlantic Ventures

Gilles’s professional path ultimately brought him to the United States, where he took up the position of Technical Director of U.S. Operations for the Washington and New York bureaus of CBC.

As such, Gilles was essential in managing the technological side of CBC’s operations, which included radio and television programs in both English and French. During his time in the US, he demonstrated his professionalism, flexibility, and unshakable dedication to greatness.
