Mary Grubb was born in the year 1934 in the city of Hershey, Pennsylvania, to her parents, Paul M. Grubb and Grace (Ober) Grubb. Her parents were originally from Pennsylvania. She spent her formative years in Elizabethtown, where she engaged in a wide variety of activities, including drawing and painting, swimming, playing tennis, basketball, and field hockey, performing and singing in school musicals, and playing clarinet in the marching band. She also participated in a variety of other activities. One of the things that she enjoyed doing the most during her childhood was taking care of and riding her cherished horse, Queenie.
This was one of the hobbies that she delighted in doing the most. She received her diploma in the year 1952, which she received while she was a student at Elizabethtown High School, where she was recognized for her great athletic performance.
Both of her sisters, Mildred and Dorothy, were inducted into the EAHS Athletic Hall of Fame in the year 2013, which was also the year that took place. It was in appreciation of the pioneering role that they played in the establishment of girls’ competitive sports programs at the school during the late 1940s and early 1950s that she was awarded this medal.
This prize was bestowed upon her in recognition of the pioneering role that they played in the development of the field. Mary received her Bachelor of Science degree in schooling from West Chester State Teachers College in the year 1956.
This was located at the same institution where she had previously completed her schooling. As a result of the persistent knee and foot discomfort that she experienced throughout her whole adult life, she was unable to continue playing field hockey or basketball at the collegiate level.
Due to the excruciating pain she was experiencing, she underwent a series of surgical procedures, including three knee replacements, which finally led to her having to retire from both sports. Over the course of her whole adult life, she continued to struggle with the problems she had been experiencing with her knees and feet.
