His first position was with the Geele Hardware Company, and after working there for seven years, he joined forces with Chri3t Zelle in 1993 to establish a partnership that allowed him to run a hardware store located at 1214 Michigan avenue. In the year 1897, he married Miss Augusta, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Zelle, and together they ran the business that was later referred to as the Trilling Hardware firm.

At one point in time, the company was known as the North Side Hardware company; however, it has since reverted back to its initial name. Hugo Trilling, Mr. Trilling’s brother, eventually purchased his interest in 1909. In the years that followed, he worked for the Jewel Stove Company of Detroit, Michigan, traveling for over ten years.

After that, he entered the oil industry and became a pioneer merchant in that particular field of work. In the northeastern corner of N. Eighth street and Michigan avenue, he constructed a gas station at that location. Within a short period of time, the corporation well-known as the Trilling Bros.

Oil company had established a total of six stations that were operational. Shell Oil Company purchased the entire company in 1929 and took over the operation. In the month of May in the year 1930, it was reported that a new service station, which would be named as the Trilling Oil and Supply company, would be opening at 2038 Calumet drive.
