The Perry and Eastport communities are grieving the loss of Dennis Turner, a respected licensed Eastport pilot and dedicated community leader who passed away on Saturday, March 23rd, 2024, at the age of 74. His sudden death has left family, friends, and colleagues in shock, as they remember a man whose life was characterized by intellectual curiosity, community service, and a passion for aviation.
Dennis Turner was born on April 9, 1949, in St. Stephen, NB, to Wesley J. and Frances M. (Morrison) Turner. Raised in Eastport and Perry, he attended Eastport schools before graduating from Shead Memorial High School in 1967. He later earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Husson College. From his teenage years, Dennis showed a remarkable talent for chemistry, honed during his time at the Mearl Corporation in Eastport.
Beyond his professional endeavors, Dennis was known for his diverse range of talents and interests. He possessed a voracious intellectual curiosity, immersing himself in various subjects through extensive reading and research. A connoisseur of local history, Dennis could engage in knowledgeable conversations on almost any topic, offering valuable insights into the stock market and investments to his family and friends.
Dennis’s adventurous spirit led him to pursue aviation, holding a pilot’s license and actively participating in the Eastport Airport Committee. Additionally, he volunteered significant time for Eastport’s former ambulance corps and served on the Eastport School Board, demonstrating his commitment to education.
After relocating with his wife Gwen to their residence on the Shore Road in Perry, Dennis continued to enrich his community through various engagements. His multifaceted persona, characterized by intellectual curiosity, community service, and a passion for aviation, endeared him to all who knew him.
Dennis Turner is survived by his wife Gwen, daughter Amy, son Jeffrey, cherished granddaughters Tori and Cassidy, great-grandchildren Chloe and Myles, as well as numerous extended family members. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral service. Those wishing to honor Dennis’s memory may make gifts to North Perry United Methodist Church or Sarah’s House of Maine.
The passing of Dennis Turner has left a void in the Perry and Eastport communities, but his legacy of service, kindness, and passion will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
