Dr. John W. Sensakovic, a revered infectious disease specialist and a cherished figure in his community, passed away on April 19, 2024, at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was 77 years old. Born in Perth Amboy and a long-time resident of Lincroft since 1983, Dr. Sensakovic dedicated his life to medical excellence and family, creating an indelible mark both professionally and personally.
Dr. Sensakovic’s career was marked by significant achievements and contributions to medical science. He served as the Director of Infection Control at JFK Medical Center, the Corporate Director of Medical Education at Saint Michael’s Medical Center, and the Director of the Nosocomial Disease Laboratory at Saint Michael’s. His academic role as the Associate Dean of Graduate Medical Education at Seton Hall University further highlighted his commitment to advancing medical knowledge and practice.
His medical expertise was widely recognized, earning him accolades such as the Clara Barton Medical Service Award and being named one of the top five infectious disease specialists in New Jersey. His peers respected him greatly, often seeking his wisdom and advice on complex medical issues.
Beyond his professional life, John was a family man through and through. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Beverly Sensakovic, his daughters Sonia Marie Handshy (and her husband Rob) of Illinois, and Michele Sensakovic of Freehold (and her fiancé James), and his adored grandchildren, Lauren Michele, JT, and Annie. These three children were his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
An avid lover of the outdoors, Dr. Sensakovic found solace and joy in Long Beach Island where he enjoyed fishing, boating, and being surrounded by his family and friends. He owned several boats, named Sonia Michele, Beverly Anne, and Triple Treasure, reflecting his deep love for the sea and his family.
His loss is deeply felt by his siblings Fran, Steven, and Carolyn, sister-in-law Bette Jane Lubas (and her husband Henry), and nephews Justin and Jonny Lubas. John was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Stella Sensakovic.
The community will have a chance to honor his life and legacy during the visitation scheduled for Tuesday, April 23, 2024, from 3:00 to 7:00 pm at John E. Day Funeral Home in Red Bank. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Associated Humane Societies in Tinton Falls.
