Harris County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Investigator, John H. Coddou Passes Away In A Fatal Car Accident

For the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Tuesday was a heartbreaking day after one of its deputies was killed when a truck struck him on the Grand Parkway.

The deputy was recognized by the department as John H. Coddou. He was fifty years old.

Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that Coddou was struck by a white Chevrolet 2500 as he was helping with a mishap on the Grand Parkway in the Cypress area. After being airlifted to the hospital, Coddou passed away.

It’s not Coddou’s usual task to run patrol. He worked as an investigator for the HCSO’s Violent Crimes Unit at the time of the crash. The sheriff claimed he sprang into action to assist when he noticed neighbors in need.

“His actions of stopping to assist the people demonstrate his character,” Zach Vercher, a Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputy, stated.

It was on a fishing trip with the nonprofit Texas Boys Outdoors that Vercher recently got to know Coddou. The group arranges outdoor excursions for first responders, veterans of the armed forces, and underprivileged children.

Verche said, “Wonderful man.” Extremely modest, articulate, and grounded in reality. And undoubtedly a family man.”

Prior to the county, Deputy Coddou served his country. Prior to joining HCSO over two decades ago, he served in the United States Army. Prior to becoming a deputy in 2005, he initially worked for the organization as a correctional officer in 2003.
