In the aftermath of the tragic hit-and-run incident during South by Southwest in downtown Austin on March 12, the community mourns the loss of William Dunham, aged 34, who has been identified as the second victim of the senseless accident.

Alongside 26-year-old Cody Shelton, Dunham fell victim to the reckless actions of Tyrone Thompson, aged 23, who stands accused of driving under the influence, resulting in the devastating loss of two lives.

While Shelton tragically lost his life at the scene of the accident, Dunham fought bravely for over a month before succumbing to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of courage and compassion. Joan Winter, Will’s mother, fondly remembers her son as a hero, surrounded by scrapbooks and mementos that encapsulate his 34 years of life. She envisioned sharing these memories with Will’s own children one day, a dream that remains cherished despite the heartache of his untimely passing.

Reflecting on the moment when Will passed away in the hospital, Joan recounted the bittersweet scene as medical staff draped him with a quilt symbolizing the continuation of life through organ donation. It is through this selfless act that Will’s legacy lives on, as his organs have been gifted to save the lives of four individuals. Joan expressed profound gratitude for her son’s ability to give, a testament to his enduring spirit of generosity and compassion.

As April marks Donate Life Month, the significance of organ donation is underscored, highlighting the critical need for donors to alleviate the growing demand for life-saving organs.

Chad G. Carroll, Director of Donate Life Texas, emphasizes the invaluable contribution of every donor, recognizing the profound impact their gift has on those in need. For William Dunham, his heart will soon beat within another’s chest, carrying with it his laughter, love, and the essence of his indomitable spirit.

For Joan and her family, the act of organ donation offers solace amidst grief, providing a tangible connection to their beloved son as a part of him continues to live on in others. It is a poignant reminder that even in tragedy, there is hope, and through the generosity of donors like William Dunham, countless lives are forever changed.

As Joan reflects, the act of donation is not just an end but a beginning—a continuation of Will’s legacy that transcends time and space, offering comfort and healing to those in need.
