Brittany Ussin, 25-Year-Old New Orleans Man Shot and Killed in the 300 Block of Ptolemy Street

Family members have identified the woman who was shot and killed in the 300 block of Ptolemy Street on Monday, April 22, as 25-year-old Brittany Ussin.

Her family described her as a loving friend and proud mother of six.

Videos posted on social media show a group of women attacking and dragging Ussin.

At one point, during one of the videos, a loud pop can be heard. Investigators said Ussin was shot at least once. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died.

Michael Willis, Ussin’s uncle, said the news was unbearable.

“To hear a doctor come out and tell us, listen, we tried, you know, but we did the best we could do when she’s gone,” Willis said. “That was the hardest thing to ever see and hear.”

Willis said the fight should have been stopped rather than recorded.

“If you’d stepped in and broken it up, maybe this wouldn’t have turned into a violent crime. Maybe, this wouldn’t be a stabbing or shooting but no one stopped the fight. Everyone wants to go live; everyone wants the footage,” Willis said.

According to Willis, there have been issues between the women for a while now and family members have been trying to get Ussin away from New Orleans. He said there have also been issues with substance and mental health abuse.

“We was offering and everybody was offering Britney, look, come to Atlanta, come here, come here. You know, they’re trying to get away from the stuff that we saw going on.”

As a community advocate and family member of Ussin, Willis says something needs to change.

“We just need to come up with something and figure out how we work, which I agree to disagree with, and come up with some kind of solution to make it work for all communities.”

So far, no suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime and the NOPD has not released information about any potential suspects.
