MPD Officer Shoots and Critically Injures Man Who Threatened to Shoot Others in Residential Area Near 38th Street and College Avenue.
A police shooting incident occurred on Thursday afternoon in a residential area near 38th Street and College Avenue on the city’s near-north side, leaving a man critically injured. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) responded to a report of a person armed with a weapon in the 3900 block of Broadway Street, northwest of 38th and College, shortly after 2:15 p.m. Thursday.
According to IMPD Officer William Young, the report was updated to a person pointing a weapon at others and threatening to shoot them, leading to an escalation into a police shooting. Medics were dispatched to the scene around 2:20 p.m. for a gunshot victim. The man, whose identity has not been confirmed, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
No officers were injured in the incident, according to IMPD. This marks the fourth police shooting of 2024 for IMPD, following 18 or 19 police shootings in 2023. The incident has sparked an investigation, and the U.S. Department of Justice has announced an in-depth review of IMPD’s uptick in police shootings during 2023, at the request of IMPD Chief Chris Bailey.
The review will analyze data, records, policies, and practices related to police shootings, and will also engage with the community and IMPD stakeholders through individual and group interviews. The incident has raised concerns about police shootings and the need for transparency and accountability. The investigation is ongoing, and more information will be released as it becomes available.
