Dashawn Powell Jr., 29, has been extradited to St. Joseph County, Indiana, to face charges related to the fatal shooting of 26-year-old Olivia Carrillo in April 2021. Powell was transferred from the Ripley County Jail, where he was being held on an unrelated drug charge.
Powell is charged with one count of murder, one count of robbery, and one count of aiding, inducing, or causing a murder. According to court documents, Powell allegedly communicated with a man at the scene and went to the house under the guise of a drug deal, which turned into an armed robbery. A struggle ensued, resulting in the gun going off and Carrillo’s death.
The South Bend Police Department responded to the scene on April 27, 2021, and found Carrillo and a man with gunshot wounds. Carrillo was pronounced dead at the scene. Through DNA analysis, Powell was identified as a contributor to evidence collected from the residence, including the gun.
The shooting left Carrillo’s two-year-old son, Elijah Maldonado, without a mother. Ivan Maldonado, the boy’s father, described Olivia as a loving and wonderful mother despite their separation.
Powell has a status of counsel hearing scheduled for Friday, May 3, to determine if he has hired an attorney and to proceed with the case. The community is seeking justice for Olivia Carrillo and her family.
