Darren Michael Smith, a 55-year-old teacher from Mill Valley, was found dead off Drakes Beach on Wednesday, just a day after being arrested on suspicion of child sex crimes. Smith’s body was discovered floating in the water by a search and rescue crew at approximately 5:33 p.m., according to the Marin County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith had been arrested on April 30, 2024, on suspicion of engaging in sexually abusive and obscene activities with a child, as well as continuous sexual abuse of a child. The Mill Valley Unified School District had filed a report on March 28 detailing the circumstances behind his arrest, and he had been placed on administrative leave since then.

According to the sheriff’s office, Smith’s arrest resulted from a comprehensive investigation into the claims, which included forensic interviews and an assessment of the available evidence. He was booked into the Marin County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bond.

The circumstances surrounding Smith’s death are still unclear, but authorities responded to Drakes Beach after a 911 caller reported a surfer may have been washed out to sea. Smith’s body was found approximately 2.5 miles northwest of the Drakes Beach Parking area, and he was observed to be unconscious, unresponsive, and exhibiting signs of physiologic death.

The Marin County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the cause and manner of Smith’s death, and the county coroner will determine the official cause of death. The sheriff’s office is also encouraging anyone with information on this case to contact them at (415) 479-2311.

Smith had been employed by the Mill Valley Unified School District since 2013, and his arrest and death have sent shockwaves through the community. The district has expressed its commitment to providing support and resources to students and staff affected by the situation.
