A devastating car accident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, May 3, resulting in the tragic death of 21-year-old Brooks H. Kaechele of Elberta. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), Kaechele was involved in a single-vehicle collision that ended with his car submerged in the Intracoastal Waterway.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:23 a.m. when Kaechele’s 2008 Mitsubishi Eclipse veered off the road and collided with a guardrail, multiple traffic signs, trees, a wooden deck, a boardwalk, and boardwalk poles. Unfortunately, Kaechele was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
Initial reports indicated that Orange Beach Police Officers responded to a call at Cumberland Farms, located at 23679 Canal Road in Orange Beach, Alabama, regarding a car striking a pedestrian. However, upon arrival, a witness identified the suspect vehicle, and officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The vehicle fled west on Canal Road, and the officer maintained a safe distance while attempting to keep the car in sight.
The suspect vehicle failed to navigate a 90-degree turn at Tacky Jacks in Gulf Shores, resulting in the collision and subsequent submersion in the Intracoastal Waterway. Officers attempted to rescue the driver but were unsuccessful.
