Kim Novak, a pioneering labor leader and president of United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local 1518, has passed away at the age of 38, surrounded by her family. Her untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout the labor movement and beyond.

Novak was a remarkable individual who broke barriers and defied conventions throughout her career. She was the first and youngest female president of Local 1518, a position she held since January 2019. Her leadership and vision inspired countless workers and union members across British Columbia and beyond.

Patrick Johnson, secretary of UFCW Local 1518, paid tribute to Novak’s extraordinary life and legacy. “President Kimberly Novak led a remarkable life that positively impacted the lives of countless people,” he said. “She was a vital member of our organization, serving in various leadership capacities, including secretary-treasurer, union representative, and director.”

Novak’s dedication to the labor movement was unwavering. She was a vocal advocate for workers’ rights, respect, and dignity. Her leadership and advocacy extended beyond Local 1518, as she served on the UFCW Canada National Council and as vice-president of UFCW International.

Premier of British Columbia David Eby expressed his deep sadness at Novak’s passing, calling her “a bright light advocating for workers throughout B.C.” He extended his sincerest condolences to her family, including her two young sons, sisters, brothers, and all those who loved her.

Novak’s impact on the labor movement and workers’ lives cannot be overstated. She was a trailblazer, paving the way for future generations of female labor leaders. Her tireless efforts to promote respect, dignity, and fairness in the workplace inspired countless workers to stand up for their rights.

UFCW Local 1518 represents employees at various supermarkets and companies, including Safeway, Save-on-Foods, and others. Novak’s leadership and advocacy had a direct impact on the lives of thousands of workers and their families.

The labor movement has lost a true champion and leader with Novak’s passing. Her legacy, however, will continue to inspire and motivate workers and union members to fight for their rights and dignity.
