On March 7, 2024, Jae Lynn Esparza, a 22-year-old Odessa resident, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for her role in a conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute fentanyl, a drug that ultimately led to the death of a 16-year-old local child.

According to court records, on October 2, 2023, law enforcement and medical professionals responded to a report of a suspected drug overdose at a residence in Odessa.
